Peter Wong Tung Shun, Chairman and Non-Executive Director

Age 59. Mr Wong is Chief Executive of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. He is also a Group Managing Director and a member of the Group Management Board.

Mr Wong joined HSBC in 2005. From April 2005 to January 2010, he was Group General Manager and Executive Director, Hong Kong and Mainland China of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

In April 2007, he was appointed Deputy Chairman and Non-executive Director of HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited. He is also Chairman and Non-executive Director of HSBC’s seven rural banks in the Mainland: Hubei Suizhou Cengdu HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; Chongqing Dazu HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; Fujian Yongan HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; Beijing Miyun HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; Guangdong Enping HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; Chongqing Fengdu HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited; and Dalian Pulandian HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited.

Mr Wong is also a Non-Executive Director of HSBC Bank Australia Limited, Hang Seng Bank Limited, Bank of Communications Co Ltd and Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China Ltd and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited.

He is also is a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers and Chairman of the Financial Services Advisory Committee, Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

On 5 February 2010, Mr Wong was appointed as Chairman and Non-executive Director of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad.

 

Mukhtar Hussain, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Age 50. Mr. Mukhtar Hussain graduated from University of Wales with a BSc Economics. He first joined the HSBC Group in 1982 as a Graduate Trainee in Midland Bank International.

In 1991, he was appointed Assistant Director Samuel Montagu. After close to 11 years of working in the Group's London offices, Mukhtar then held numerous posts in Dubai including CEO, HSBC Financial Services (Middle East) and also established the initiative to create the first foreign investment bank in Saudi Arabia for HSBC.

In 2006, he headed back to London as Global Head of Principal Investments, the proprietorial and fund investment arm of HSBC. He moved back to Dubai in 2008 as Deputy Chairman, HSBC Bank Middle East Limited, Global CEO of HSBC Amanah and CEO Global Banking and Markets, Middle East & North Africa.

Mr. Hussain took over as Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad on 15 December 2009. He will also continue in his role as Global CEO of HSBC Amanah.

 

Jonathan William Addis, Executive Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer

Age 51. Mr Addis graduated from Cambridge University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He joined HSBC as an International Officer Management Trainee in April 1981. Over the next 26 years, he has gone on to hold various postings covering business areas such as operations, credit, commercial banking and trade services. He has extensive experience in different regions including Europe, Middle East, the US and Asia. His last position was Chief Operating Officer, Asia Pacific, HSBC Hong Kong where he was responsible for banking operations, operations support services, security, administration and purchasing, property and business continuity.

Mr Addis was appointed Executive Director & Deputy Chief Executive for HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad on 22 October 2008.

 

Tan Sri Dato' Sulaiman bin Sujak, Non-independent, Non-Executive Director

Age 76. Served as an executive Director and Adviser of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad for 15 years, before being appointed a non-executive Director in 2004. He graduated from the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, England in 1958 and the Royal College of Defence Studies, London in 1973 and had served both with the Royal Air Force and the Royal Malaysian Air Force. He was the first Malaysian to be appointed as the Royal Malaysian Air Force Chief (1967-1976). He served as an Adviser of Bank Negara Malaysia (1977-1983), Commercial Director of Kumpulan Guthrie (1983-1989) and Deputy Chairman of Malaysia Airline System (1977-2001). Currently, he also sits on the board of FACB Industries Incorporated Berhad, Nationwide Express Courier Services Berhad and Cycle & Carriage Bintang Berhad.

 

Dato' Henry Sackville Barlow, Independent, Non-Executive Director

Age 66. He educated at Eton College and obtained a MA from Cambridge University. He is a former Council Member of the Incorporated Society of Planters and Honorary Secretary of the Heritage Trust of Malaysia. He is a Director of Sime Darby Berhad (formerly known as Synergy Drive Berhad) and The International and Commonwealth University of Malaysia Berhad. He was formerly Joint Managing Director of Highland and Lowlands Para Rubber Co. Ltd., being instrumental in the company's Malaysianisation process in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dato' Barlow is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants, England and Wales, and a keen environmentalist.

 

Datuk Ramli bin Ibrahim, Independent, Non-Executive Director

Age 70. Datuk Ramli is a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia. He is currently non-executive Director of several other public listed and unlisted companies, including MEASAT Global Berhad, Ranhill Berhad and BCT Technology Berhad. He was formerly Senior Partner of KPMG Peat Marwick Malaysia (now known as KPMG Malaysia) and executive Chairman of Kuala Lumpur Options and Financial Futures Exchange Berhad.

 

Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Mohamed Ariff bin Abdul Kareem, Independent, Non-Executive Director

Age 70. Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamed Ariff obtained his B.A. First Class Honours and M.Ec. from the University of Malaya. He completed his Ph.D. program at the University of Lancaster, England in 1971, on a Commonwealth Scholarship.

Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamed Ariff, a specialist in International Economics, is currently the executive Director of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER). Previously he held the Chair of Analytical Economics at the University of Malaya where he had also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration. He was a Board Member of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and is a Board Member of National Productivity Centre (NPC). He had a brief stint in the private sector as the Chief Economist at the United Asian Bank in 1976.

 

Ching Yew Chye, Independent, Non-Executive Director

Age 57. Mr Ching Yew Chye obtained his Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.) from University of London. He embarked on a consulting career in 1978 in the United Kingdom, specializing in the banking industry prior to joining the Accenture office in London in 1982. He returned to Malaysia in 1983 and went on to hold various management positions in Accenture and retired as Senior Partner in 2007. He also participated as faculty and lead faculty in numerous Accenture global continuous learning workshops and schools. A technology and management consulting professional, he has helped various organisations identify, frame and resolve their business (strategic, operational, people and IT) issues.
