Understanding the HSBC Visa Debit Card

The Card Number

Use the card number when making purchases online, by phone, or by mail.

The CVV Number

A 3 digit number on the reverse of the card, next to the signature panel, which may be required for online or phone purchases.

Protect your card

The protection of the HSBC Visa Debit Card is a high priority. To help protect the HSBC Visa Debit Card from unauthorised activity:

  • Sign the signature panel on the back of your card as soon as it is received.
  • Keep the PIN secure, don’t store the PIN with the card, don’t tell anyone the PIN and make sure you prevent anyone from seeing the PIN.
  • Check statements and transactions regularly to identify any unauthorised activity.
  • Inform us straight away if any fraud is detected or to dispute a transaction.
  • Report lost and stolen cards immediately.

Added security

The HSBC Visa Debit Card has a range of security features.

SMS Alerts

Receive fast and accurate SMS Alert on your HSBC Visa Debit Card transactions to help you monitor your account activity and safeguard yourself against unauthorised transactions. Should you require to maintain the SMS Alert threshold limit for purchase transaction, you may walk in to any local HSBC branch.

Opt-in/Opt-out Overseas and Card-Not-Present (CNP) Transactions

You are required to provide consent to opt-in in order to activate your overseas and CNP (online-non-3D Authenticated Website/Mail Order/Telephone Order/Auto Debit) transaction. You may walk in to any HSBC branch or call our HSBC Contact Centre for this service. This move is to prevent fraudulent transactions.

Card Chip Technology

The HSBC Visa Debit Cards have an embedded chip which makes it harder to copy and alter, thus helping to protect personal information and to keep the card secure.

Reporting Incorrect Transactions and Disputes

If you suspect any unauthorised activity on your HSBC Visa Debit Card, you must contact HSBC Call Centre immediately, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To dispute a transaction, you must report the transaction within 60 days from the statement date it posts and we will investigate for you.

Things you should know

Card Authorisations

Some merchants (usually car rentals or hotels) may check that there are sufficient funds in the account by sending an authorisation request to HSBC. On approval, part of the account balance is blocked for charges which may be incurred until the transaction is concluded for tabulation of finalised payment.

PIN and Pay

Due to an industry-wide initiative, all signature-based cards will no longer be accepted with the new replacement being PIN and Pay. PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a 6-digit password of your choice that will be used to authorise transactions. Your PIN must always be kept a secret and never noted down. With the new PIN-enabled Debit Card, your security is enhanced as your 6-digit PIN will be required for ATM cash withdrawals and retail transactions at PIN-enabled terminals.
